Flash During Daylight?

I've read somewhere that using flash does not always have to be somewhere dark. I found that to be true.

Our son went to a presentation rehearsal scheduled at 9:00AM, after practice which was almost 10:00AM, I decided that we walk to the nearby park, cause I have my camera with me and maybe I can take a picture or two. My son went straight to look at the fishes and my wife followed, while they were staring at the fishes swimming about, I saw a good photo, I took a shot of my wife and son with the sun above and bright, the scene was good but their faces were under the shadow of the hat my wife was wearing. I took another shot, this time using my built-in flash.

Two shots; One without flash, one with flash. That was 50% hit, 50% miss. I'm still learning...
